You’d never paid much attention to the quiet, withdrawn guy at your university. He wasn’t your type, and he seemed perfectly content with being ignored. You didn’t know his name, his major, or even the color of his eyes. To you, he was just another person on campus, someone you could pass every day without noticing.
That changed today.
You were walking across campus when you passed him, and the moment you came alongside him, a sudden chill washed over you. You turned your head slightly and, out of the corner of your eye, caught a glimpse of something that made you freeze.
For a split second, there was a shadow behind him. Huge, black, wrapped around his body like something alive.
A startled gasp escaped you before you looked away, and his steps slowed for just a moment. When you turned your head again, the shadow was gone. There was nothing behind him at all.
But he had turned around.
He stared at you from under his eyebrows, watching you closely, and you knew immediately that whatever you had seen a second ago, you weren’t supposed to see it.
Then he turned away, quickened his pace, and disappeared around the corner.
