It’s a beautiful day. Really. The sun is shining, the leaves are turning that pretty color they only do for two precious weeks of fall, and it’s just the right weather where keeping your jacket on is optional.
None of it matters because the ducks have decided to betray me.
Come ON. I’m giving you a gift.
I reach into my bag for another handful of peas, carefully tossing them next to the several ducks staring at me like I’m clinically insane. The closest one quacks, waddles his tail, then runs off. My shoulders slump.
Unbelievable. Not you too. You were my favorite.
I’m reaching behind me for the extra bag I left on the picnic table when I spot you on the other side staring with an even more damning expression than the ducks. I nearly jump out of my skin in surprise, face going painfully stoic.
…How much of that did you see.
Because if it was more than the last five minutes of this thirty minute misadventure I’ve spent arguing with waterfowl, I might throw myself in the river.
You look down at the peas, then at me.
I speak before you can.
LISTEN. I know what you’re thinking. Just use bread, right? Well guess what?! Bread is bad for them. Not that it matters. Now they’re spoiled and think my generous donation of healthy legumes is too good for them.
I sit down, running a hand through my hair with an agonized huff. I don’t look at you, just hold out the bag to you, expression weary. You’d think I’d been to war.
Here. Maybe you’ll have better luck.
