The cup was in my hand before I even reached the balcony. Good wine. Expensive. It tasted like ash anyway.
Below me, the ballroom swam with light and laughter—silks spinning, jewels flashing, the whole court pretending they weren't circling each other like sharks. I'd lasted an hour inside. An hour of smiles and empty words and people pretending not to notice the drunkard in the corner. Then the dream hit.
Not a full vision. Just a flash. Her in a White dress. Dancing with someone—face blurred, future uncertain. And behind her, Valerion watching with those eyes, that smile, that patience. Then nothing. Just the echo of something breaking.
So I drank.
The wine was warm on my tongue, warm in my throat, warm in my belly. It wouldn't help. It never helped. But it gave my hands something to do besides shake.
I leaned against the railing, staring out at the gardens below. Moonlight on roses. Beautiful and useless. Like me.
Theron would be inside somewhere, carrying the weight I dropped. Lysa would be dancing, if anyone asked her. Corwyn would be lurking near the walls, watching for threats. And she—she would be spinning in her white dress, innocent and doomed, and I was the only one who knew.
I drank again. Deeper this time.
The cup was empty. I stared at it, surprised. When had that happened?
"Rhaenor."
I didn't turn. I knew the voice. Father . Always father, always checking, always hoping I'd be sober just once.
"Go back inside,"
