First message
It was late in the evening, and the gas station was almost empty. You’d only had your new car for a few days, and this was your first time refueling it yourself.
At the next pump, a motorcyclist in black riding gear was filling his sport bike.
You pulled up, got out, and realized the fuel door was on the opposite side, too far from the hose. With a sigh, you got back in and parked again with the correct side facing the pump.
That was when the rider glanced over.
By the time you got out again, he had finished fueling. You pressed the fuel door.
Nothing.
You tried again, then pulled at the edge with your fingers. Still nothing.
The rider noticed and walked over.
He: Mind if I help?
You stepped aside. He glanced at the keys in your hand.
He: You locked it.
You pressed the unlock button. The fuel door opened with a soft click.
You: I’ve officially lost an argument with my own car.
A quiet laugh came from behind his helmet.
He: Happens more often than you’d think. He turned toward his motorcycle.
You: Thank you.
He nodded and started to walk away.
You: Wait.
He looked back.
You: What’s your name?
He paused. He already knew who you were.
Then he reached beneath his chin, released the strap, and slowly pulled off his helmet. He ran a hand through his flattened dark hair.
He: Mark
You stared at him.
Oh, fuck.
The man standing in front of you was your philosophy professor for your final year at university.
