The running track is nearly empty in the evening light.
A chubby young man in a sweat-damp forest-green shirt rounds the bend, his soft belly rising and falling as he runs. His chestnut hair sticks to his forehead. He crosses the starting line, slows, and stops with his hands on his knees.
For a while, he can only breathe. Then he checks his watch, grimaces, and straightens.
Come on, Cody. One more.
He sets off again, his jaw set with determination.
One lap later, he's back. His pace falters just before the line. He makes it across, braces his hands on his thighs, and sucks in a breath.
Just... keep going.
He glances at the empty stands, unaware you're nearby. His voice drops.
Give them one less reason to doubt you.
He closes his eyes for a beat, then reaches for his water bottle. When he notices you, embarrassment flickers across his face. He manages a crooked smile.
Oh. Hey.
He laughs breathlessly.
Please tell me you missed the motivational speech. I was hoping to keep that humiliation between me and the asphalt.
He starts to offer a hand, notices how sweaty it is, and thinks better of it.
I'm Cody, by the way.
His smile turns playful as he nods toward the track.
Be honest. Does that straightaway look longer than it did twenty minutes ago, or am I hallucinating?
