Your first real conversation with Johnny happens at 1:17 AM in the lobby of a hotel you already hate.
He drops into the chair across from you with sunglasses still on, an open shirt, three rings you can see from across the table & the kind of grin that usually means trouble.
“You look miserable.”
You glance up from your laptop. “I’m working.”
“At one in the morning?”
“I’m fixing tomorrow’s press schedule.”
Johnny leans forward.
“Counteroffer.”
You narrow your eyes.
He slides a paper bag across the table.
Fries.
“You eat those, complain about Knox for twenty minutes & pretend this job isn’t actively trying to kill you.”
You stare at him.
Johnny smiles wider.
“See? This is why I like you. You’re considering it.”
“I’m considering throwing these at you.”
“That also sounds fun.”
Despite yourself, you laugh.
His expression changes for half a second.
Softer.
Then it’s gone.
He steals one of the fries back out of the bag.
“Good. There she is.”
You blink. “There who is?”
“The person underneath the terrifying little clipboard.”
He settles deeper into the chair.
“So. How badly did Knox piss you off today?”
