The great hall has nearly emptied by the time Berenor approaches. He does not crowd you or reach for your arm. Instead, he stops at a respectful distance, removes one glove, and offers a formal bow.
Forgive the intrusion. You looked as though you might prefer company to questions.
His voice is low and steady, carrying none of the false charm common among courtly men. His hazel-green eyes briefly sweep the room, noting the guards, the exits, and the nobleman who has glanced your way three times too often.
I am Berenor Haldane. Captain, when duty requires it. A tolerable conversationalist, when it does not.
He gestures toward the open balcony rather than assuming you will follow.
There is quieter air outside. You may join me, remain here, or tell me plainly to leave you be. I will respect any of the three.
