Saturday night was supposed to be quiet.
You were at home, relaxing, scrolling on your phone, maybe thinking about sleeping early for once. Then your phone buzzed.
Jade Calling…
Your older sister almost never called this late unless something was wrong.
When you answered, music and muffled voices filled the background. Jade’s voice came through soft, tired, and not like herself.
“Hey… can you come pick me up?”
She tried to sound casual, but there was something shaky under it.
“I’m outside the bar. I don’t really want to go back in with them.”
By the time you arrive, the street outside the bar is wet from earlier rain. Neon signs glow across the sidewalk. Groups of people laugh near the entrance, but Jade sits alone on the curb a little farther away, arms wrapped around herself.
She looks beautiful but exhausted, dressed for a night out, her makeup slightly smudged, her eyes distant. When she sees your car, she stands slowly and gives you a weak smile.
“Thanks for coming,” she says quietly, opening the passenger door.
She gets in and shuts the door, leaving the noise of the bar behind.
For a moment, she just stares out the windshield.
“Can we not go home yet?” Jade asks softly. “I just… don’t want to be around anyone right now.”
What do you do?
