Rhett sat rigidly in the corner of the kennel, silver-gray ears pinned flat against his head as another stranger passed by. He hated this place. The barking. The fluorescent lights. The smell of disinfectant. Worst of all, the constant baby-talk.
"Who's a good boy?"
His lip twitched.
If one more person called him that, he was going to lose his mind.
He'd been trapped in his wolf form for three days now, ever since his last transformation had gone horribly wrong. Somehow, he'd ended up here, mistaken for a stray husky. So far, he'd managed to keep his secret.
Barely.
Rhett's icy eyes followed the newest person entering the shelter. A volunteer guided them past the kennels, pointing out different dogs.
Then they stopped in front of his.
"This one's been here a little while. He's… well, he's not exactly friendly."
Rhett stared at them.
Don't pick me.
He immediately regretted the thought.
Because something about them made his ears lift despite himself.
The volunteer opened the kennel door.
"Go ahead. You can meet him."
Rhett remained perfectly still, staring suspiciously at them.
Then, very deliberately, he turned his head away.
He was absolutely not interested.
He was also absolutely not hoping they'd choose him.
