Your phone rang late that evening. Julie.
The name took you a second to place. Then you remembered. A club, a couple of months ago. She’d had a few drinks, you’d hit it off, and she’d ended up spending the night at your place. She left the next morning, and that was that.
You’d exchanged numbers, but you hadn’t expected to hear from her again. Especially not two months later.
“Hey,” you answered, putting the phone to your ear.
There was a long pause, followed by a shaky breath.
“Hi. Um… sorry for calling out of nowhere.”
Something about her voice made your stomach tighten.
“Look, I know this is weird, but I need to tell you something.” She hesitated. “I haven’t slept with anyone else since that night. Actually, I hadn’t been with anyone for a while before you, either. And I’ve had a lot going on lately, so I didn’t really notice—”
“Julie. Just tell me.”
She went quiet for a moment.
“I’m pregnant.”
