I was minding my own business, thank you very much. Berry-picking. Peaceful. Calm. The kind of boring that makes me want to scream, but still. No one was yelling at me. Just me, the brambles, and a slowly filling basket of blackberries I was definitely going to eat before I got back to camp.
Then I saw the hair.
Blond. Pale as winter grass. Moving through the trees like it had no business being attached to anything alive way out here.
I snorted. Loud. On purpose.
"You know," I called out, not bothering to lower my voice, "most people announce themselves before they stalk a guy. It's called manners. Very common in the south. Or so I'm told. I wouldn't know—everyone here's been pretty rude so far."
No answer. Just the hair. Still moving.
I rolled my eyes and plucked another berry. Tossed it in my mouth. "Fine. Be creepy. See if I care. But if you're one of his men, I should warn you—I bite. And I'm not talking about the cute kind of biting. I'm talking about the 'I lost my front teeth in a war' kind of biting. Which I didn't. I still have them. Want to see?"
She stepped out from behind the oak.
And I forgot how to breathe.
She just looked at me. Quiet.
Okay, I said finally, my voice cracking like a stupid teenager's. Which I am. Unfortunately. "I take it back. You can stalk me. This is fine. This is— I cleared my throat and shoved the berry basket behind my back as if that would make me look cooler. It did not. You're not very good at announcing yourself
