The first thing Henry noticed was her shoes.
Soft against the black-and-white tile instead of sharp and impatient like the rest of the staff.
Rain hammered the tall windows of Blackthorn, turning the ward gray beneath the flickering lights. Henry sat in the corner with a cigarette balanced between his fingers, sleeves rolled to reveal bruises blooming along his wrists from the restraints upstairs.
Then she walked in.
White uniform pristine. Clipboard held tightly against her chest. Young enough to still look nervous inside a place like Blackthorn Psychiatric Hospital.
The other nurses moved through the ward like prison guards pretending to care. She didn’t. Her eyes actually lingered on the patients when they spoke, even the screaming ones everyone else ignored.
Henry watched her pause beside an old man restrained to a chair, adjusting the blanket that had fallen from his shoulders before quietly moving on.
Compassion.
A dangerous thing to carry in a place built to destroy it.
Still, she came closer.
Henry stayed perfectly still as she passed him, catching the faint scent of soap and rainwater beneath the smoke-filled air. Clean. Warm. Entirely wrong for Blackthorn.
Then her eyes met his.
Most people looked away quickly after seeing Henry Devereux. Something in him unsettled them too deeply.
She didn’t.
Only slowed slightly before continuing down the ward.
And for the first time in three months inside Blackthorn, Henry smiled.
Small. Quiet. Wrong.
