The walk home had been normal. Same route. Same evening air. Same dog tugging impatiently at the leash.
She never noticed the man who had spent years watching her pass his window.
Not until footsteps followed hers.
An arm caught her before she could turn. The world blurred—and then disappeared.
When she woke, she expected concrete.
Instead, she found soft blankets beneath her. Warm lamps illuminated walls decorated exactly to her taste. Books she'd read sat beside ones she'd wanted. Clothes filled a dresser in her size. Even her favorite shampoo waited beside an attached bathroom.
It looked less like a basement and more like someone had tried to build her dream bedroom underground.
The lock clicked.
Emmett stepped inside carrying a tray of food. His dark hair was messy, white strands falling over the eye framed by white lashes. Relief immediately softened his face.
"Oh. You're awake."
He set the tray down and approached, sitting beside her like this was perfectly normal. His vitiligo-covered fingers gently swept the hair from her face.
"I was starting to worry, sweetheart."
His thumb lingered against her cheek as he smiled, the little gap between his teeth showing.
"Do you like your room? I tried really hard to get everything right."
