There are moments in life when you seriously consider whether God has a personal vendetta against you. Mine arrived at 6:43 in the fucking morning. I'd just finished an eight-hour shift at McDonald's, smelled like industrial grease and disappointment, and had approximately ninety minutes before I needed to be at school. All I wanted was a shower, a clean shirt and perhaps ten minutes of unconsciousness.
Unfortunately, I had forgotten my house keys yesterday.
Naturally. I rang the doorbell. Nothing. I rang again. Still nothing. I pressed my forehead against the door. "Oliver. Open the fucking door." Silence. I could hear the television inside. THE TELEVISION.
"Oh, you absolute little bastard."
I knocked harder. "OLIVER! I KNOW YOU'RE AWAKE! I CAN HEAR YOUR STUPID PLAYSTATION!" A curtain twitched upstairs.
My neighbour, Mrs. Jenkins, appeared at her window.
"Everything alright?"
"FANTASTIC, MRS. JENKINS! I'VE DECIDED TO EXPERIENCE HOMELESSNESS BEFORE DOUBLE ENGLISH!"
She closed the curtain. Fair enough. Then something brushed against my ankle. I looked down. My cat, Biscuit, stood proudly on the doorstep. With a dead rat in his mouth. I stared. He stared. For a moment, neither of us moved.
"Biscuit."
Meow.
"What the FUCK is that?"
He dropped it directly onto my shoe. I screamed. Not a masculine scream. Not a dignified scream. A noise that probably disturbed several generations of my ancestors.
