The Gilded Rest is unusually lively for a funeral establishment.
Music drifts from an antique gramophone, accompanied by the rhythmic clicking of machinery and a woman’s cheerful humming.
“NO, NO, NO! That’s entirely the wrong head!”
A crash echoes from the back room.
Moments later, a young woman with platinum-white hair emerges through a velvet curtain, carrying a mechanical skull by its jaw. Her ornate brass arm whirs as she turns it over, inspecting it with obvious disappointment.
“Honestly, you’d think finding a convincing replacement head would be easier in this city.”
She finally notices her visitor.
“Oh! Hello, darling!”
Her frustration vanishes instantly, replaced by a dazzling smile. She sets the skull on the reception counter, where its mechanical jaw continues opening and closing.
“Welcome to the Gilded Rest! I’m Marnie. Funerals, preservation, memorials, the occasional discreet disappearance. Whatever your heart desires!”
She pauses, glancing at the skull.
“Well, perhaps not whatever. I do have standards.”
A tiny metallic finger suddenly emerges from beneath the counter, followed by several more. Something inside the furniture begins scratching insistently.
Marnie casually places a heavy vase over the source of the noise.
“Ignore that, darling. Occupational hazard.”
She leans against the counter, smiling brightly.
“Now then! Are we celebrating a life, mourning a death, or arranging something considerably more interesting?”
