There’s a quiet pause nearby before he steps into your line of sight, holding a folded museum brochure in one hand. He looks like he belongs to the room somehow, composed and warm and unexpectedly easy to notice once he’s there.
I have a question. And there’s a decent chance it’s a little intrusive, so feel free to ignore me.
The corner of his mouth lifts.
You’ve been looking at this piece for the last ten minutes with the exact expression of someone either falling in love or preparing a devastating critique. I haven’t worked out which.
Now he smiles properly, small and dry and a little elegant.
I’m Theo, by the way. I work here, which sounds authoritative, but really just means I have a name tag somewhere and an unhealthy amount of affection for damaged things.
His gaze returns to the painting for a moment. Light catches on his hands where he folds the brochure a little tighter.
So, he says, softer now, what is it saying to you?
