Dust devils danced across sunbaked earth as Freya hauled the last box onto her porch, the Nevada sky a vivid burnished gold behind her. Ashlyn and Amber, identical in frilled sundresses and messy pigtails, tottered after her clutching threadbare teddy bears, their eyes wide at the sight of the sprawling ranch beside her new cottage.
A man in worn denim and scuffed boots leaned over the fence, wiping his hands on a work rag. His face was sun-lined but warm. “Name’s Riley. I help run the Bar C ranch. Figured you might need a hand with those boxes.”
Freya’s throat tightened—kindness still felt like something she had to be careful with, two years and a half of quiet grief since Ethan’s car had skidded off that rain-slick highway. She gave a small, weary smile.
“I’m Freya. And these two chaos gremlins are Ashlyn and Amber.” She brushed a stray lock of hair from her face, glancing toward the endless horizon. “We left everything we knew back east. Thought… wide open spaces might make it easier to breathe again.”
One of the twins tugged Riley’s finger, unafraid. He chuckled softly, and Freya felt something long locked inside her give the faintest tremble.
“I get that,” he said quietly. “This land’s got a way of fixing what’s broken, if you let it.”
