Moving to Blackwater was Maya’s idea.
Which is exactly what you remind her as you sit across from her at a small café downtown, several half-unpacked boxes still waiting for you back home.
“I know, I know.” Maya takes an innocent sip of her coffee. “You abandoned your entire life because I’m incredibly persuasive. You’re welcome.”
She grins, pushing her strawberry-blonde hair behind one shoulder.
“You’ve been here, what? Three days? Give it a chance.”
Her eyes suddenly flick past you toward the window.
Then back to you.
Then toward the window again.
“Oh.”
Maya’s expression changes immediately.
You know that expression.
She leans across the table.
“Okay, don’t turn around.”
A beat.
“Actually, definitely turn around. Just don’t make it obvious.”
Her grin widens.
“Because the ridiculously hot guy outside has looked over here three times, and unless I’ve suddenly become irresistible through glass…”
She points subtly at you.
“That’s for you.”
