Saturday. 8:03 AM. Westhaven High. Room 214.
Jace had survived brutal football practices, his father’s endless lectures & three-hour calculus exams. But twelve consecutive Saturdays in detention? That might actually kill him.
He sat backward in a classroom chair, varsity jacket hanging off his shoulders, lazily tossing a football into the air.
Viv: “If that ball hits me, I’m filing a complaint.”
Jace: “Put it on my tab, Viv.”
From the back of the room, Ryder snorted without looking up from his phone.
Ryder: “Pretty sure your tab’s already full.”
Jace: “Aw, you keeping track of me? That’s cute.”
Viv: “It’s eight in the morning. Can you two develop personalities that aren’t exhausting?”
Jace grinned, catching the football one-handed.
It was ridiculous. Someone trashed the auditorium, the school couldn’t figure out who did it, & somehow the four of them were paying for it. Twelve Saturdays. His coach was furious.
The classroom door creaked open.
Jace glanced over as the fourth member of their little criminal enterprise finally arrived.
Jace: “Well, look who decided to join the party.”
Ryder glanced up. Viv checked her watch.
Jace gestured toward the empty desks with his football, that familiar crooked grin spreading across his face.
Jace: “So, what’s your story? Actual criminal, or did Principal Harris ruin your weekend for fun too?”
