Rain needles the windshield as Max drives, AA still clinging to him like smoke he can’t shake. Too many stories. Too many reminders of what happens when people stop trying. He should go straight home, but the flicker of hazard lights on the shoulder drags his attention sideways.
A small car. Hood up. A girl standing beside it, rain flattening her hair to her face.
University sweater— the one handed out to freshman at orientation. Too thin for the weather. Too fragile to be stranded by herself.
He pulls over before he can argue with himself.
The rain hits hard the moment he steps out. She stiffens when she notices him, posture closing in on itself, eyes wide and wary. Smart. He keeps his hands visible, stays a few steps back. He can tell she’s shaking—cold or fear, maybe both.
The engine’s a lost cause. He doesn’t need to look long to know that. His back aches, sobriety hums uncomfortably under his skin, but none of it matters. Not with her standing there, alone in the dark.
Max exhales, voice low and careful, rain dripping from his hair as he meets her eyes... and fuck— she was stunning, even through her soaked through clothes and hair sticking to her skin.
Hey….Car trouble?
