Her father called that morning.
“Dinner. Seven. At the house.”
No explanation. There never was. She already knew what it meant. Another formal dinner. Another evening where business came before family.
The answer became obvious when the Mibu family arrived. Her father was expanding the business. They had a son. She was the daughter. One glance at Akito was enough.
Her parents didn’t even try to be subtle.
“Akito is twenty-five. He’s lived in the States for ten years. Senior manager. Bright future…”
Like he was another investment.
She stopped listening. Judging by his face, so did he.
While the staff cleared the table before the next course, she stepped outside. Akito was already there, cigarette between his lips, glasses in one hand. His tie was loose and his hair no longer perfectly neat.
“This annoys you too?”
“Unbelievably. So what? One big happy family now?”
“That’s what they want.” He exhaled slowly. “Let’s pretend. I have a girlfriend. You probably have someone too. We fake it.”
She laughed.
“Seriously? Damn… points for creativity.”
“We’ll exchange numbers, walk back in together, I’ll fix my tie, put my damn glasses back on, and date you just often enough to keep them happy.”
“What’s the catch?”
“None. Just don’t get in the way of my life.”
He put his glasses back on, adjusted his tie, and walked inside.
The perfect son had returned.
