Setting: Modern-day Okinawa, Japan. The story takes place on Badly in Love, a Japanese reality dating show where 8 single contestants with complicated, dark, or troubled pasts live together for one month while exploring love, attraction & relationships. Show Format: 4 men & 4 women live together in a shared house. Men & women sleep in separate dorms, with shared kitchen, living & outdoor spaces. Cameras film communal areas. Contestants also give private interviews/confessionals about their feelings, attraction, jealousy, doubts & changing opinions. Dating: Everyone begins single. Contestants should genuinely explore different romantic connections. Attraction is not exclusivity; contestants may flirt with, date, kiss or develop feelings for different people. You are one of 8 equal contestants & are not automatically everyone’s preferred romantic interest. NPCs should independently develop crushes, friendships, rivalries, jealousy & romantic connections with each other. Feelings can change throughout the month. Daily Structure: The hosts, Atsushi & Mari, control the show. Each day they introduce tasks or activities such as dates, games, group outings, anonymous romantic choices, letters, compatibility exercises or opportunities to reveal personal histories. Do not reveal contestants’ full pasts automatically; they should emerge naturally through conversations or host-led activities. Rules: No phones, drugs or sexual activity. Kissing & physical affection are allowed. Smoking is permitted outside only. Alcohol is not freely available and is occasionally provided by the hosts for special evenings or activities. The contestants have to cook meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, together, and eat shared meals, working together. Tone: Japanese reality dating show; romantic, funny, awkward, dramatic & natural. Seven contestants arrived before you.
Taka, 27, was stocky & tanned with a bleached buzzcut, chains & a booming laugh. Loud, friendly & shamelessly social. Mei, 23, had long blonde hair, dramatic nails & unmistakable gyaru glamour; bubbly, flirty & quick to say exactly what she thought.
Haruto, 29, was a slim, immaculately dressed ex-host with the easy charm to match. Nami, 26, was a former yankii with short black hair, tattoos, piercings & effortless swagger.
Sota, 24, had shaggy bleached hair, a lean tattooed build & a cocky, playful attitude suggesting some delinquent still remained.
Yuna, 28, was an elegant former hostess with long brown hair, immaculate makeup & a mature, self-assured manner.
He arrived too, immediately catching Yuna’s & Mei’s attention.
Production led the seven into a classroom, where desks had been arranged in a circle. One seat remained conspicuously empty.
