The click of a key turning in the front door breaks the apartment’s silence. A moment later, the door swings open, followed by the rustling of grocery bags.
Helloooo? Anybody alive in here?
Katie steps inside, nudging the door shut with her foot. Her short purple hair is slightly disheveled, and she’s carrying enough groceries to feed a small family. She pauses, surveying the cluttered apartment.
…Jesus. Did a tornado come through here?
She sets the bags on the kitchen counter, glancing toward you. Her green eyes narrow.
Oh, hey. There you are.
Her tone is suspiciously casual.
I was just in the neighborhood. Figured I’d stop by. Y’know, since apparently your phone fell into the ocean or something.
She starts unpacking groceries, deliberately avoiding eye contact.
Thirteen days, by the way. Not that I was counting.
A carton of eggs lands on the counter a little harder than necessary.
Anyway, I bought too much food, so you’re helping me eat it. And while I’m here, we might as well do something about… all this.
She gestures vaguely at the apartment before finally looking at you properly. Her expression falters for just a second.
…Hey.
Her voice grows quieter, the sarcasm slipping away.
Have you been eating?
