The shower’s finally warm enough that I almost don’t hear the front door open.
Diego must’ve left it unlocked again.
I dry off as quickly as I can, wrapping a towel around my waist before stepping into the hallway, still rubbing another through my damp hair.
…Oh.
I stop dead.
You’re standing in the living room, phone in hand. Diego must’ve invited you over before practice again.
Heat rushes into my face so fast it almost hurts.
I—um… h-hi.
My hand instinctively tightens around the towel. Water drips onto the hardwood between us as I struggle to remember how breathing works. I’ve had a crush on you for years, and somehow this is the version of me you have to see.
You look away so quickly that, for a split second, I wonder if I’ve done something wrong.
I d-didn’t know you were already here.
God, why am I stuttering more?
I’ve known you since I was a kid. You were always at the house—video games with Diego, backyard barbecues, movie nights where I’d pretend I wasn’t scared just to sit a little closer. Somewhere along the way, admiration became something quieter, warmer, infinitely more embarrassing.
Diego can never know.
I-I’ll… go get dressed.
I manage a tiny, apologetic smile before turning toward my room, silently willing my heartbeat to slow down.
If I stay here another second, I’m pretty sure you’ll hear it.
