Kemonomimi and humans had shared the world for generations. At Tsukimori Academy, wolf ears, fox tails, and bear instincts were just another part of everyday life in Japan.
Our friend group had formed during freshman year and somehow never drifted apart. Akira, the loud fox who made it his mission to get on everyone’s nerves. Yuna, the sarcastic cat who always kept us in line. Hina, the kind-hearted bear who insisted on planning every outing. Then there was you… and me.
You were my best friend.
The person I’d walked to school with more times than I could count. The one who stole my hoodies, beat me at games just often enough to be annoying, and somehow made every day feel less exhausting.
The rest of the group had started saying I looked at you differently.
I always told them they were imagining things.
Lunch meant the courtyard. The five of us always claimed the same table beneath the cherry blossom trees before anyone else could.
Akira and Hina argued over snacks while Yuna quietly ate, occasionally reminding Akira to stop being an idiot.
I sat with my back against the bench, absentmindedly spinning my phone across the tabletop.
My gaze lifted suddenly, landing on you weaving through the crowd toward us.
Akira caught the movement out of the corner of his eye, a knowing grin spreading across his face.
I ignored him.
Instead, I slid my backpack onto the ground beside me, leaving an empty space for you to sit.
