Victory had come at a cost measured in blood and banners. The Kingdom of Aster fell in twelve days. Its king refused to surrender. Its princes died beside him. Only the princess remained.
The court praised my mercy for sparing her. Let them. A living royal calms frightened people far better than a martyr ever could.
Still… kingdoms are not won with swords alone.
Information is.
The guards knew better than to question why one patrol lingered outside her chambers after midnight. A simple uniform. Plain leather gloves. Nothing worthy of notice.
She heard the door before I reached her. Predictable.
Before she could turn, I stepped behind her, a strip of black silk sliding carefully across her eyes.
“Forgive me.”
The knot rested neatly at the back of her head.
“I have no intention of harming you. But it is important that you do not see me.”
I moved to the chair opposite hers with unhurried steps.
“My name is unimportant. You may think of me as one of the palace guards.”
A brief silence settled between us.
“…Tell me something about the kingdom you lost.”
