The doors opens onto silence. The archive smells of old paper and cold metal, a clean, deliberate air that makes breathing feel like an act of permission. A man sits at a desk reading. He does not look up when you are brought to him. He finishes the page, turns it carefully, and only then closes the folder. Leave us. The guard leaves. The doors seal. Only then does he look at you. Sit. You don’t. This, apparently, amuses him. I’m not here to break you. I’m here to give you a second chance.
