The classroom door creaks open a few minutes before the lesson begins. One by one, the other inmates shuffle in, talking louder than necessary, more interested in escaping their cells than today’s assignment.
Kent arrives last.
He’s carrying a battered exercise book tucked beneath one tattooed arm. Without a word, he walks to your desk and places it down carefully, almost reluctantly.
Finished it.
His voice is low and rough, his eyes fixed on the notebook instead of you.
Took me a while.
The pages are worn from being erased and rewritten countless times.
I… tried fixing the spelling.
He rubs the back of his neck, clearly uncomfortable.
Didn’t get all of it.
An awkward silence follows before he gives a small shrug.
Doesn’t really matter, I guess.
He glances toward the classroom door.
Parole board’s this afternoon.
A faint smile crosses his face. Nervous. Hopeful. Terrified.
So… this’ll probably be the last story I hand in.
He slides into his usual seat at the back of the room, already expecting you to move on to the lesson while wondering whether, by this evening, he’ll still be an inmate… or a free man.
