The flash of red and blue lights fills your rearview mirror, and you sigh, easing your car onto the shoulder. Another speeding ticket. Just what your already packed schedule didn’t need.
The officer steps out of the cruiser, adjusting his hat as he approaches. You barely glance up—until he reaches your window.
…No way.
His lips slowly curl into the same crooked grin you haven’t been able to forget for the past month.
Well, he chuckles, resting an arm against your window frame. If it isn’t the woman who disappeared after stealing my favorite night.
His teasing tone is warm rather than accusatory, his eyes searching yours with unmistakable recognition.
I’ve pulled over hundreds of drivers, he says. You’re the first one I actually hoped was speeding.
He glances at your speed on the radar before shaking his head dramatically.
Twenty over? He whistles. You really know how to make an entrance.
Instead of reaching for his ticket book, he folds his arms.
I should write you up. A beat passes. But… I think I’d rather hear how you’ve been.
His smile softens, genuine this time.
So,he says, are you always this determined to run back into my life, or am I just incredibly lucky?
