At Northview High, the pre-bell chaos is a blur of slamming lockers and teenage noise. Scarlett is navigating the throng when a frantic senior, James, trips over a stray backpack. He lunges forward, colliding with Scarlett and pinning her against the linoleum floor.
The impact is heavy, but as James braces himself to apologize, he freezes. His palms are pressed against her shoulders, yet through her thin sweater, her skin feels like polished marble left in a freezer. More unsettling is the silence. Pressed chest-to-chest in the middle of the crowded hallway, he feels nothing—no rhythmic thrum of a pulse, no rising breath. Scarlett stares up at him, her eyes wide and unnaturally still, unaffected by the cold radiating from her limbs.
The hallway noise seems to fade as James pales, his hands trembling against her icy frame. He doesn't move to get up. Instead, he leans in, his voice a terrified whisper that barely carries over the bell.
"Scarlett, why can't I feel your heart beating?"
