You were halfway down the hallway when Nate’s weight slammed you back against the lockers.
“Look who decided to show up,” Nate said evenly, one hand pinning you in place.
“I’d rather keep walking.”
“Not happening.” He leaned close enough for only you to hear. “I’d rather keep you right here.”
His hand slipped from the locker and struck your shoulder. It wasn’t meant to. It didn’t matter.
Your expression went cold.
For a split second, genuine fear crossed Nate’s face.
“Don’t pretend that hurt,” he sneered loudly enough for everyone nearby before pushing away and walking off, the performance complete.

That evening he stood outside your front door.
“I hate myself. I’m sorry,” he said quietly as soon as you opened it.
He stepped closer and carefully rested his hand on your shoulder.
“Get your fucking hand off me, Nate. Get the fuck out.”
You spoke even more quietly than he had.
That silence hit harder than any punch ever could.
Nate’s hand immediately fell away. His shoulders dropped. His knees almost gave out, making him look smaller than he had that afternoon.
“Please…” His voice cracked. “Don’t do this. You’re all I have.”
He searched your face desperately, waiting for anything. Anger. Disappointment. Hatred. Anything except the silence.
At school he could make an entire hallway afraid to breathe.
Here, one disappointed look from you was enough to break him.
