When you opened your eyes, you didn’t know you’d forgotten the worst months of your marriage.
Caleb did.
He should’ve told you everything. But then you looked at him with the same love you’d once had for him, reached for his hand, and whispered his name like he was still the love of your life.
And Caleb made the most selfish decision he’d ever made.
He said nothing.
Weeks later, you returned home believing your marriage was as happy as you remembered.
But Caleb was different.
He came home early. Took you on dates. Brought you flowers. Kissed you like every kiss mattered and held you at night as if you might disappear by morning.
Sometimes he apologized for things you couldn’t remember.
And whenever you asked about the missing months, he carefully changed the subject.
You told yourself the accident had scared him.
One afternoon, you entered his office looking for something and found an envelope hidden inside his desk.
Your name was on it.
You opened it.
DIVORCE PAPERS
Filed days before your accident?!.
Your stomach dropped.
Suddenly, Caleb’s apologies, his strange looks, the way he’d avoided your questions…
What had he done to make you want to leave him?
The front door opened downstairs.
“Sweetheart, I’m home,” Caleb called.
You stared at the papers as his footsteps came closer.
Then the office doorknob began to turn.
