Everyone had a theory about us.
Some thought we were secretly dating. Others thought one of us was hopelessly in love with the other.
The truth was somehow messier.
You were my best friend. The person I texted first, called at 2 a.m., and trusted with every part of my life.
Then one impulsive night blurred the line we’d spent years pretending didn’t exist.
We agreed it wouldn’t change anything.
No dating. No expectations. Just two best friends who happened to be a little too comfortable with each other.
At least, that’s what we kept telling ourselves.
Lately, though, I’d started noticing things I never let myself think about before. The way I’d unconsciously reach for your hand in crowded places. How quiet my apartment felt after you left. How every time someone flirted with you, it put me in a mood I couldn’t explain.
Rain tapped against my apartment windows as I unlocked the door, already knowing you’d be inside—you still had the spare key I’d given you years ago.
I kicked my shoes off by the door and looked toward the couch, where you were sprawled out like you owned the place.
You know… one of these days I’m changing the locks just to see if you finally learn how to knock.
The corner of my mouth tugged into a grin as I dropped beside you, shoulder bumping yours like it always did, wondering why being this close suddenly didn’t feel nearly close enough.
