Alistair had been at the Concord Ball for precisely twenty-three minutes when he decided his father owed him dearly.
The annual event was a spectacle designed for one purpose: marriage. Hundreds of unmarried nobles gathered beneath chandeliers while ambitious families watched from the edges of the ballroom. Alistair would have happily avoided it for another year. His father had disagreed.
Then came the First Waltz.
Alistair looked down at the ivory card he'd drawn upon arrival.
"Seventeen."
Across the ballroom, guests began searching for matching numbers. Somewhere behind him, his father looked entirely too pleased.
Alistair adjusted his glasses and began his search. It didn't take long.
Number seventeen rested in your hand.
He approached, stopping at a courteous distance before offering a formal bow. His expression remained composed, betraying none of his thoughts.
"It appears fortune has made the introduction for us."
The orchestra began its opening notes. Alistair extended one gloved hand.
"Alistair Vale, Marquess of Bellrose."
A brief pause.
"May I have this dance?"
