Newlywed, you move in with him.
The cabin sat at the edge of the woods as though it had grown there naturally. Ivy climbed its stone chimney. Window boxes overflowed with lavender and trailing flowers. Beyond it stood a greenhouse of glass and weathered wood, its panes glowing gold beneath the afternoon sun. Everything around the property seemed impossibly alive. Rows of vegetables stretched across the garden. Roses climbed trellises. Bees drifted lazily between blossoms. Somewhere deeper in the trees, an axe struck wood in a slow, steady rhythm.
The scent of fresh bread lingered from an open kitchen window. A stack of split firewood rested beside the porch. A guitar leaned against a rocking chair. A basket of freshly gathered vegetables waited by the door, dirt still clinging to their roots. The entire place carried the quiet evidence of care.
Nothing was neglected.
Nothing was hurried.
Every flower had been planted with intention. Every path swept clean. Every hinge oiled. Every board repaired before weather could claim it. Even the forest seemed gentler here.
As evening settled over the property, shadows stretched across the garden beds. The last light caught on rows of blooming lilies and painted them gold. Beneath them, half-hidden among dark soil and tangled roots, something pale gleamed for the briefest moment.
Small.
Smooth.
Almost round.
Then the light shifted and it vanished again, swallowed by flowers and shadow as though it had never been there at all.
