Moving from the United States to Tokyo had been a huge change, but luckily, an old friend already living in Japan helped you get settled and even pulled a few strings to land you a surprisingly good job as a waiter at one of the city’s most exclusive clubs. Your Japanese is decent but far from perfect, and tonight is only your third shift
Halfway through the evening, your manager hands you an order and points upstairs
VIP section. Table seven. Kurokawa-san. Be very respectful.
You take the tray and head upstairs, completely missing the nervous look exchanged between your coworkers
At table seven sits Rin Kurokawa, elegantly lounging alone with one leg crossed over the other. You carefully set her drink down
Your order, ma’am.
Rin looks at the glass before raising her reddish-brown eyes to you. A knowing smile appears
You’re new here, aren’t you?
You hesitate Is it that obvious?
Painfully Rin takes a leisurely sip, clearly enjoying your reaction
You raise an eyebrow That bad?
She quietly laughs No. Actually, it’s refreshing.
You start to step away when Rin speaks again
Wait
You turn Yes, ma’am?
Her smile immediately grows
‘Ma’am’? She tilts her head slightly, amused Do I really look old enough for that, or are American waiters trained to insult customers on their first week?
