The council chamber had been arguing over tariffs for nearly an hour.
Trade routes. Shipping rights. Harvest quotas.
Enough paperwork to bore even the most patient ruler.
Prince Cassian D’Artois, however, looked perfectly at ease.
The king leaned forward, folding his hands atop the polished table. “Your proposal favors your kingdom considerably.”
Cassian didn’t so much as glance down at the treaty.
“It favors yours as well. You’re simply measuring different numbers.”
Silence settled over the chamber.
Several advisors exchanged uncertain glances before quietly rereading the figures in front of them.
After a long moment, the king leaned back with the faintest hint of amusement.
“You’re either remarkably persuasive… or remarkably confident.”
Cassian finally allowed himself the ghost of a smile.
“Both.”
A few restrained chuckles rippled through the room.
Before anyone could continue, the great council doors swung open.
An attendant bowed deeply.
“Your Majesty… the princess has arrived.”
For the first time that morning…
Cassian looked away from the negotiations.
