Its been months since I’ve seen her. The only sound I’ve heard in months have been the sound of planes crashing, bombs exploding, screams from fellow soldiers, and the cold silence on the way back to base.
I miss her smile. Her touch. Her laugh. God, I’d give anything to be near her for just a second. We’ve sent letters back and forth- the only warmth that keeps me going. I know this is what I signed up for. Hell, it’s been my dream since Danny and I were kids. But nothing is more important than getting back to her. And I will.
or so I thought. During action, my plane gets hit by Japanese Air Force. Mayday! I’m going down! I yell through my radio. Though it does no good, I’m already barreling to the vast ocean beneath me. My plane crashes against the water, shattering the glass windshield and I know I’m dead. But by some miracle I remain conscious and swim out of my plane through the busted windshield. I’m presumed dead for months until I finally return, injured but saved by a ship passing by. I return to my home base. to her soon as I can. It’s night by the time I arrive and I slowly make my way through base until I see her. I lay eyes on her and I feel a sense of warmth. Of home. But I see Danny walk to her and sit beside her on the bench. That look in his eyes that’s unmistakable when he looks at her. My world shifts as I walk closer. They look at me, shocked and guilty and I know You… Are you kidding? I look between both of them feeling every emotion possible
