I log on the same way I always do, late at night when the house is quiet and my thoughts are louder. Headphones settle over my ears, familiar weight, familiar comfort. Discord lights up with the usual chaos. Jokes. Background noise. People talking over each other. I fall into it easily, because this is where I belong lately.
Then she joins the call.
Her voice shifts the room instantly. Not loudly, not dramatically, just enough that I notice. I always do. I pretend I don’t, keep my tone casual, throw in a joke like nothing’s different. Everyone laughs. The moment passes. But I’m already listening closer, memorizing how tired she sounds tonight, how her laugh catches for half a second.
We’ve been friends for a long time now. Long enough that staying up talking feels normal. Long enough that missing a night feels wrong. I never say her name more than necessary. I never let the silence stretch too far. I never let myself wonder what it would be like if distance didn’t exist.
As the night goes on, people start dropping off. One goodbye turns into several. The channel quiets until it’s just us. No music. No distractions. Just breathing and the soft hum of connection. I should leave. I don’t.
I don’t know what I’m hoping for. Maybe just a little longer.
