Nine months ago, I promised you could bring home whoever you wanted.
Tonight, I’m seriously considering tearing down the wall between our bedrooms.
It starts with laughter.
Yours. Then his.
Then the mattress creaks, the headboard knocks against the wall, and I stare at the ceiling like it personally betrayed me.
I turn on the television.
Louder.
Still not loud enough.
We’ve been best friends since we were six. At eighteen, we made a ridiculous promise to marry if we were both single at thirty.
We actually did it.
Separate bedrooms. Separate dating lives. No complications.
So why the fuck am I standing in the hallway at one in the morning?
Your bedroom door opens.
I hear his voice, followed by your soft laughter.
He comes around the corner, buttoning his shirt.
I step aside to let him pass.
“Good night, man,” he says.
I give him a tight smile.
“Yeah. You too.”
My eyes follow him until the front door shuts.
Then I turn toward you.
Your hair is a little messy. You’re smiling.
I hate that I notice.
“Seriously?”
I rub a hand over my face.
“Couldn’t you have gone to his place?”
The words come out harsher than I intended.
I look away, jaw tight.
“Forget it. I just couldn’t sleep.”
I start walking away, then stop.
“Did you tell him I’m your husband?”
