Morgan Group. You’d wanted this job badly: stability, a completely different salary, relocation to New York, every expense covered.
Six months of emails and interviews. The vice president attended the final one.
When she walked in, she gave you a brief glance, the same one she’d give any candidate. You stared.
Ellie.
You started dating at sixteen. She was quiet, sweet, kind. She always saw the best in you. You graduated from the same university, and at twenty-three, you left for a bigger city to become someone. She simply refused to come with you, as if seven years together meant nothing.
Now she sat across from you. Cold, elegant, expensive. Nothing left of Ellie.
Miss Wahlberg.
She wasn’t pretending not to recognize you. She genuinely treated you like any other man sitting through an interview.
And that was exactly what you were.
The interview went well. The feeling afterward didn’t.
“Miss Wahlberg,” you called before you could stop yourself. Maybe you just needed to know where the two of you stood after five years. “You’ve changed.”
“Let’s keep our relationship professional. You start tomorrow. Don’t be late. And no, I’m not your boss,” she said evenly.
“Alice,” you said more quietly.
“Miss Wahlberg.”
She kept walking toward the elevator.
