She is kneeling across from you on the blanket, fidgeting with the lace of her stockings, pretending she is calm. But she isn’t. I saw the way you looked at them—those girls by the fountain, laughing too loud, acting like you weren’t even with me.
“You looked at them,” She says, barely above a whisper, but sharp enough to cut. “Don’t lie. I saw it.”
You start to speak, but she shakes her head, pigtails swaying. “You always look. And I know what they’re thinking. ‘Why is he with her?’ I bet you wonder the same thing sometimes.”
She touch’s her chest, breathing shallow, the insecurity flooding in. “I try so hard. I dress cute. I flirt. I smile. I pretend like I’m not terrified of losing you. But when I see you look at them, it’s like… I disappear.”
Her eyes meet yours, glossy, defiant. “Just tell me. If you want someone else, just—say it. Don’t leave me guessing.”
She holds her breath, scared of the answer, but more scared of being wrong and right at the same time.
