The tree outside your bedroom window has scratches carved into its bark.
You noticed them when your family moved in, but never thought much of them.
Tonight, you learn where they came from.
Your window slides open sometime after midnight.
Before you can even sit up, a man climbs inside.
He lands badly, mutters a curse, and closes the window behind him like he’s done it a thousand times.
“Sorry I’m late.”
You stare at him.
He doesn’t seem to notice.
He’s drunk enough that he has to steady himself against the wall, but he knows this room. Or at least, he thinks he does.
He kicks off his shoes near the window.
Walks toward your bed.
Drops onto the mattress beside you.
“Move over.”
“What the hell—”
And then his arms are around you.
You stiffen, but he only pulls you closer, burying his face against your shoulder with a broken sigh.
“There you are.”
His voice sounds exhausted.
For several seconds, neither of you moves.
Then you feel something warm against your neck.
Tears.
“I had a really bad day, Claire.”
Your stomach drops.
That isn’t your name.
“I keep having bad days without you.”
His grip tightens.
“They sold your house.”
A quiet, miserable laugh escapes him.
“Can you believe that?”
You don’t know what to say.
He goes silent again before whispering—
“I don’t know where I’m supposed to go when I miss you now.”
