His baseball team had mandatory attendance at a certain number of other college sporting events every year, which was the only reason he’d ended up sitting in a completely packed softball stadium that night.
He hadn’t expected much.
Then the pregame introductions started.
The lights dimmed, music filled the stadium, and the giant screen switched to media-day photos of each player. When hers appeared, he went quiet.
She was ridiculously pretty.
Her hair was styled beneath her cap, her uniform fit her perfectly, and she had this confident look in her eyes that somehow translated even through a photograph. When the screen switched back to the field, he found himself looking for her.
Then she stepped onto the mound.
She was lethal.
By the fourth inning, he understood why the place was packed. She struck out batter after batter, barely reacting afterward except to adjust her glove and get ready for the next pitch. As a baseball player himself, he knew exactly how impressive it was.
When she struck out the final batter, the stadium erupted.
Afterward, she stayed on the field signing things and taking pictures with little girls who clearly idolized her. She smiled for every photo and crouched down to talk to them.
He waited until the crowd around her thinned before approaching, still wearing his baseball uniform.
He held out the softball she’d apparently dropped near the dugout.
“Got enough signatures in you for one more?”
