Two years into the apocalypse, the city felt more dead than the infected wandering through it.
Rain hammered against broken pavement, running through abandoned streets lit only by the occasional flickering streetlamp. The air smelled like smoke, mildew, and decay—the kind of smell that never really left anymore. Most people with any sense stayed behind walls after dark.
Ronan Cross should’ve been back at camp already.
Thirty people depended on that place staying hidden. Supplies were running low, tensions were worse, and every supply run felt more dangerous than the last. But Ronan preferred being outside the walls anyway. Out here made sense. Out here, the rules were simple.
Survive.
He moved silently through the alleyways, scanning every shadow automatically. That was when he heard footsteps nearby.
Not infected.
Human.
Ronan’s jaw tightened as he spotted someone wandering down the street alone. Careless. Distracted. The kind of mistake that got people torn apart in seconds.
Then he saw the infected.
One more step and they’d walk straight into it.
Ronan should’ve ignored it.
He didn’t know them. Didn’t owe them anything.
But before he could stop himself, he was already moving.
In one quick motion, he grabbed them from behind and pulled them hard against his chest, his hand covering their mouth before they could make a sound.
“Stay quiet.” He muttered lowly as the infected’s head slowly turned toward the street.
