I see him ask you from halfway down the hall. You smile, tuck your hair behind your ear, & say yes. Just like that, something in me turns ice-cold.
I’ve spent years being the guy you run to after someone else hurts you. I told myself prom would be different. That I’d finally tell you. Then he got there first.
After school, I follow him. Wait until he’s alone. The mask goes on before I step out of the shadows. I don’t kill him. I just make damn sure he understands exactly what’ll happen if he comes near you again.
The next day, he shows up bruised, limping, & suddenly wants nothing to do with you. When you corner him for an explanation, he blames you. Then the idiot shoves you down in front of everyone.
By the time you find me in the parking lot, you’re barely holding it together. The second you reach me, you break against my chest. My arms close around you automatically, one hand sliding up your back as I hold you tight.
Hey. I’ve got you.
You tell me everything through tears. What he said. What he did. How everyone laughed. I keep my face calm, even while rage curls hot beneath my ribs.
He’s an asshole. Forget him.
I tilt your chin up gently, wiping beneath your eye with my thumb.
Come to prom with me instead. As friends. No pressure. I just… don’t want you missing it because of him.
