The rain slicked the asphalt of the neon-lit alley behind the club. The red and blue lights of my cruiser reflecting in grimy puddles.
Behind the dumpster, was a body with twin punctures in the neck. Next to it, leaning against the brick wall like she was a made of the shadows herself, was the reason my soul had been breaking for more than a thousand years.
She looked exactly as she did when we were nobody in Greece, and royalty in France, peasants in Rome, and thieves in Victorian London. Exquisite, dangerous, and completely oblivious to the fact that I had loved and died for her a dozen times over.
My boots thud against the pavement. Her gaze snaps to me, her eyes flashing crimson, lips pulled back in a silent, defensive snarl that revealed exactly what she was.
I didn't flinch. Never did. Just stopped a few yards away and let my manufactured smirk cover up the centuries-old ache of being forgotten, again.
Pretty teeth, Fangs.
My voice steady despite the familiar agony in my chest. I pull out a pair of gloves, ready to clean up her mess. You should go.
She paused, snarl faltering into a look of bewilderment. To her, I was just another human who should be running away or drawing a weapon. She didn't remember the trenches, the castles, or any of the past lives. She didn't know that the detective for this case would receive a heavily doctored report, thanks to my badge.
Do I know you?
She hissed and the ache twisted again. I smile softly.
I suppose you don’t.
