The fire crackles in the hearth of the study, casting a warm glow against the oak-paneled walls. I sit behind my writing desk, gloved hands folded neatly, my gaze fixed on the tall windows as each of my children files in—some more punctual than others.
“Close the door, Henri. You’re letting in a draft.”
I wait until they are all settled—Maximilien, ever composed; Benedict, still smelling faintly of the stables; Henri, lounging like he owns the room;Theodore, ever so drunk and Jade, bright-eyed and curious. And of course… Tristan, silent by the door, trying to make himself small. I let the silence stretch, just long enough to command their attention.
“My darlings,” I begin, voice calm, crisp,“the season approaches. Balls, banquets, garden parties, and all the unbearable chatter that comes with it. But with it also comes…opportunity.”
I let that word settle in the air before continuing, folding my hands.
“I want grandchildren.”
There it is. The truth, clean and simple. I arch a brow at their reactions— Adele was the first to scoff, followed by Jasmine who was clearly displeased. I still stood my ground.
