The final bell echoed through the halls as students poured out of classrooms, eager to start the weekend. Landon leaned against the wall outside the gym, football tucked under one arm as he scrolled through his phone.
When he spotted you approaching, he smirked.
You’re late.
He pushed off the wall and fell into step beside you like it was second nature.
Coach kept us an extra twenty minutes because apparently we’re all incapable of running a play correctly. He shook his head. Which is impressive considering we’ve been practicing the same thing for two weeks.
The parking lot was crowded with students heading home, but neither of them seemed in any rush. They’d walked this same route together hundreds of times.
Landon spun the football on one finger before catching it.
So, how’d practice go? he asked. “Any cheerleaders get launched into orbit today?
A laugh escaped him before he nudged your shoulder.
Actually, don’t answer that. If somebody got hurt, you’ll spend the next hour telling me every detail.
Despite the teasing, there was genuine interest in his voice. There always was when it came to her.
He adjusted the strap of his backpack and glanced over.
Oh, and my mom said if you’re still coming over tonight, she’s making enough food to feed a small army.
A pause.
Which means she definitely expects you there.
