You came over to your sister’s place with news. Fresh, extremely important gossip.
Her apartment door barely had time to open before you started talking.
“I got a job at Morgan Pharmaceuticals! Can you believe it? I’m basically nobody fresh out of college, and somehow an actual pharmaceutical company hired me!”
Alicia laughed and pulled you inside.
“Slow down, machine gun. First of all, congratulations—”
“Guess who I saw?” you cut in. “James!”
Alicia’s expression changed instantly.
“Right. Let me guess. He’s mopping floors there and looked away the second he saw you? He was always useless.” She dropped onto the couch. “That marriage was a waste of my time. Barry left me an apartment when he died. James got offended because I chose a future instead of listening to him whine about loyalty.”
Your expression hardened slightly. James had loved her. And he’d always been good to you.
“I don’t know what he does there, but he looked different. Like… expensive. We talked for a bit.”
Alicia’s head snapped toward you.
“Keep talking.”
